Why Artificial Sweeteners are Unhealthy Alternatives to Sugar?

Artificial Sweeteners… Are they really better than sugar?!

Chances are that if you are trying live a healthier life, you are trying to cut back on your sugar intake. You may have wondered if artificial sweeteners might be a better choice for you or your family? They show up in everything. They are often touted as “Healthy” or “All Natural”. You may not even know that you are consuming them. They go by many names which may include things like: Aspartame, Sucralose, Splenda, NutraSweet, Saccharine, Acesulfame potassium-K, and many other names. On paper, they may promise fewer calories and seem like a smart decision, but are they?

Studies have linked 6 popular artificial sweeteners (aspartame, sucralose, saccharine, neotame, advantame and acesulfame potassium-k (ace-k)) to “adverse effects such as cancer, weight gain, metabolic disorders, type-2 diabetes and alteration of gut microbiota activity.”1 Which might lead most health-conscious consumers to decide that they and their families are better off without them.

These nasty conditions listed above aren’t the only problem with artificial sweeteners. These chemicals can actually spike insulin in a way similar to regular sugar. They also feed the addiction to sugar that so many people are trying to break. So, by consuming these artificial sweeteners, we may actually be making the problem worse! According to the Journal of Public health and Nutrition, Artificial Sweetener use “has been reported to be associated with an increased risk of weight gain, obesity and type II diabetes”.2 Isn’t that the very thing we are trying to prevent?
