Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) women’s Strawweight No. 1-ranked contender, Tatiana Suarez, suffered her first professional loss at UFC 312 last weekend (Sat., Feb. 8, 2025) as two-time champion, Zhang Weili, won a dominant unanimous decision from inside Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

The biggest storyline of the fight — other than Weili’s ability to stop Suarez’s dominant wrestling and pick her apart — was a nasty (and bizarre) cut that Suarez suffered during the second round.

There was a mystery surrounding the cut as to when it occurred. During the third round, UFC play-by-play broadcaster, Jon Anik, revealed that Suarez’s knee hit the base of the cage fence.

At some point, the broadcast tried to zero-in on the precise moment it happened, but viewers couldn’t see it clearly. Well, the mystery appears to be over — we now know when it happened.

Indeed, At 4:21 of round two, Suarez shot in on Weili, snagging her right knee where the cage fence meets the canvas. To her credit, the previously-undefeated fighter did not react when it first happened.

Watch the exact moment where Suarez cuts her knee below:

Having the Octagon fence physically affect a fight is a rare occurrence, but it does happen — just ask Jake Ellenberger’s foot.

The nasty gash seemed to affect Suarez, at least psychologically, as the 25-minute showdown progressed. She was heard in between rounds asking her corner team how bad it was, but she was told not to worry.

Easier said than done.

Nevertheless, as of this writing, she has been silent on social media. She was, however, among four fighters transported to the local hospital “Down Under,” missing the entire UFC 312 post-fight press conference (watch that here).

If and when she Suarez does release a statement, rest assured MMAmania.com will have you covered.
