UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – Freshman Jakobi Turner jumped his way to four points to lead Roosevelt in its inaugural Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships appearance over the weekend on the campus of Saginaw Valley State.

Turner started off strong on Saturday with an eighth-place finish in the long jump with a personal-best leap of 6.48 meters, earning him one point. On Sunday, Turner attacked the triple jump and leapt his way into sixth place with a mark of 13.2 meters, which added three points to Roosevelt’s total.

As a whole, the Lakers’ men’s team finished in eighth place with seven points while the women came close to scoring but just missed the cutoff in several events. In addition to Turner’s jumping abilities, Roosevelt earned points in two very different running distances.

The distance medley relay team captured seventh place and two points on Saturday in a school-record time of 12:24.51. Also on Saturday, Tyrin Stewart set the program record with a time of 22.51 seconds in the 200-meter dash, qualifying him for Sunday’s final. He ran slightly slower Sunday but still finished eighth with a time of 22.88 seconds to earn the final point for Roosevelt.

Stewart also nearly claimed points in the 60-meter dash, missing out on the final qualifying spot for the final by 0.02 seconds. Twon Jones also took ninth place in the triple jump with a jump of 11.69 meters to finish just outside the points.

There were plenty of personal records set on the women’s side even without any points being scored. Senior Angela Louis hit personal bests in the 60-meter dash (8.10 seconds) and the 200 (26.51 seconds), but finished 22nd and 20th, respectively in those events. Junior Millicent Ghapson finished 15th in the high jump after clearing a season-high 1.40 meters.

Meanwhile, Khaniya Higginbotham shaved another second off her personal record in the 400 meters to finish in 15th. Lisset Munoz also had her best throws of her young career with records in the shot put and weight throw. The senior threw for a mark of 9.83 meters in the shot put and 8.86 meters in the weight throw after starting to train for the event at the beginning of the 2024 season.
