KENOSHA, Wis. – Roosevelt’s track and field programs had a tremendous day at the Green & White Invite on Thursday in Kenosha, Wis. with a plethora of top-5 placements at the event hosted by Wisconsin Lutheran.
On the track, Kennilyn Alexander started the meet strong by qualifying for the 100-meter dash final then surpassing her time by more than 0.2 seconds to finish fifth in a season-best 12.92 seconds. In the 200, Khaniya Higginbotham took seventh place after lowering her season-best time by 0.05 seconds to 26.80. Alexander and Higginbotham then teamed up with Angela Louis and Lainey Canan to finish second as a team in the 4×100-meter relay in 51.26 seconds.
The strength of the women’s distance running was on display as well with Cristin Moreno taking sixth in the 1,500 meters and Shelsee Isassi placing ninth in the same race. Gloria Romero then blistered past her seed time to finish second in the 5,000 meters with a time of 19:22.63 while Angie Delgado finished a strong sixth in 22:04.01.
In the throwing competitions, the women’s best success came in the javelin throw with Lisset Munoz pacing a pair of top-10 finishes with her throw of 24.17 meters to places seventh. Louis then tossed the javelin 22.45 meters to finish ninth for the Lakers.
On the men’s side, Tyrin Stewart broke his own school record in the 100 meters by running the preliminary in 10.96 seconds, the third best time of the round. He ran a strong 11.02 in the final and placed fifth. Javaris Jones followed up a fourth-place finish in the 400-meter dash to take eighth in the 200 by dropping nearly half a second off his previous best this season.
Jakobi Turner continued his dominance of the jumping competitions by winning the long jump title with a leap of 6.67 meters. The jump was slightly off his best of the season, but was still four inches better than second place. Turner followed up with a bronze in the triple jump with 12.71 meters and Twon Jones took ninth in the event at 11.55 meters.
The men also had success in the throwing competition with Kieran Cassidy leading the way in the shot put with an eighth-place finish. His throw was a career-best 11.64 meters and he also set a career high in the discus with a toss of 22.10 meters. Jonathan Sears smashed his previous personal record in the hammer throw with a 39.59-meter sling that placed him fourth.
Cameron Vahldick took eighth in the javelin with a career-long toss of 37.36 meters and Cassidy placed ninth at 36.51 meters.
