DECATUR, Ill. – A rainy Saturday in Decatur did not slow down Roosevelt’s track and field programs at the Big Blue Alumni Meet hosted by Millikin.
The Lakers took first place in three events – the men’s long jump, the men’s triple jump and men’s 100-meter dash. Two of those efforts broke school records, and both new record marks were set by freshmen.
Tyrin Stewart tied for the win in the 100 meters with a blazing time of 11 seconds flat to break the Roosevelt record and win his competitive heat by .02 seconds. Meanwhile, Jakobi Turner continued to excel with his jumping abilities by winning both the triple jump and long jump. His triple jump was just shy of his season high, but Turner broke the school long jump record with a leap of 6.48 meters to win.
Jonathan Sears also broke a school record at the meet as the sophomore placed fifth in the hammer throw with a toss of 38.97 meters. Javaris Jones ran the 400 meters in 51.86 seconds to place fifth among the 21 runners.
On the women’s side, Millicent Ghapson took fifth place in the high jump with her leap of 1.40 meters. Alexia Lohman smashed her seeded mark in the triple jump by more than a meter with her attempt of 9.97 meters to finish second. Angela Louis finished second in the 100-meter dash, just .13 seconds off the school record, and fourth in the 200 meters to lead the runners. Kennilyn Alexander took sixth in that 100-meter race and finished second in her heat of the 200, but missed out on a top-eight finish.
