ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Roosevelt track and field squad took on its biggest challenge to date Saturday at Grand Valley State’s Big Meet in Allendale, Michigan.
The meet brings together top athletes from all three NCAA divisions as well as select NAIA programs for the two-day meet. Roosevelt’s best finish came from freshman Jakobi Turner, who earned a sixth-place finish in the triple jump for the men. He outjumped five rivals from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with his leap of 13.13 meters, roughly half a meter behind second place.
Fellow freshman Tyrin Stewart finished 10th out of 83 runners in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.03 seconds, finishing thousandths of a second behind sixth place. Stewart also finished 18th in the 200 meters with a personal best time of 22.77 seconds and Kieran Cassidy set his new personal best with a 10.31-meter launch in the shot put.
Several women also set personal bests in the meet, including senior Shelsee Isassi, who beat her personal record in the 3,000 meters with a 12:41.88 finish. Lisset Munoz set new records in both the 800 meters and the shot put, finishing the race in a time of 2:42.58 and launching the shot put 9.38 meters. Angela Louis continues her improvement in her senior season with personal records in the 60 meters (8.11 seconds) and 200 meters (26.59 seconds) finishing 26th and 27th, respectively.
Roosevelt will not run again until the GLIAC Indoor Track & Field Championships on March 1 and 2 on the campus of Saginaw Valley State in University City, Mich.
