ROCHESTER — Staked to a seven-run lead, the Rochester Honkers were able to hold off the Eau Claire Express in the home finale on Wednesday night.
A five-run fifth inning proved to be enough to help the Honkers hold off Eau Claire 7-6 at Mayo Field in front of an attendance of 917.

The Honkers, who have set the NWL record for most losses in a season, improve to 17-52 overall and 9-24 in the second half. Eau Claire is 18-17 in the second half and 31-37 overall.
Rochester led 7-0 entering the fourth.
The Honkers scored a pair of runs in the first on a Miguel Cantu two-run double, before scoring five more in the third.
Cantu, a Missouri Western University junior, also had an RBI single in the third inning and would come around to score on a Max Aude two-run double. Van Coughlin and Ramon Teran also had run-scoring hits in the frame.
The Honkers offense finished with seven runs on 11 hits, with four finishing with multiple hits.
The Express made it interesting with three runs in the fourth, two more in the seventh and one more in the ninth.
Rochester reliever Patrick Schork was able to strand the game-tying run on first to end the game. He earned the save after 2 1/3 solid innings.

Rochester Century grad Ryan Ohm started for the Honkers. The University of Illinois sophomore right-hander struck out six and allowed just one hit in three shutout innings.
The Honkers and Express wrap up the two-game series in Eau Claire on Thursday. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
