A pair of Wellesley standouts lead the way on the Boston Herald Girls Hockey Dream Team. Wellesley shared the championship with Canton, who was paced by star Olivia Maffeo. Francesca Frelick of Austin Prep and Amanda Essigmann were scheduled to face one another in the Div. 1 state final, while Eliana Kane keyed HPNA’s run to an undefeated regular season.

DREAM TEAM

AMANDA ESSIGMANN

WOBURN

A four-year starter in goal, this senior capped her career by backstopping the Tanners to a share of a third Division 1 state title in that span, registering three shutouts and allowing just one goal in four tournament games. A three-time Middlesex League All-Star, Essigmann posted a 1.33 goals against this winter and ran her overall shutout total to 26. The National Honor Society member was selected to play in the Shriners Game.

ERIN FLEMING

WELLESLEY

Making her third appearance on the Dream Team, this senior defenseman was a blue line anchor for the state’s stingiest team as the Raiders allowed just 13 goals in 23 games on their way to a share of a third consecutive Division 2 state title. Fleming also chipped in seven goals and 12 assists, giving her career totals of 21-48-69. A National Development Camp invitee and Shriners Game selection, she will continue her career at Sacred Heart.

FRANCESCA FRELICK

AUSTIN PREP

This two-way force garnered a spot on the Dream Team for the second straight season as the catalyst for a Cougars squad that claimed a share of the Division 1 crown. A five-year member of the varsity and two-time state champ, the senior defenseman collected 10 goals and 12 assists in being named Catholic Conference League MVP. Also one of the state’s top softball players, the Dean’s List student will take the diamond for Duke next year.

ELIANA KANE

HPNA

The MVC/DCL Large Player of the Year, this senior defenseman helped lead the Hillies to a historic year as the only team in the state to go unbeaten during the regular season and the program’s first league title. A Shriners Game selection, she racked up 18 goals and 22 assists this winter to finish with 75 career points. Kane, a Haverhill softball captain, will continue her career at the University of New England while studying biology.

OLIVIA MAFFEO

CANTON

What a debut it was for this freshman defenseman as she was a driving force behind the Bulldogs’ run to a share of the Division 2 state title. All she did in her first season with the varsity was lead the Hockomock League in scoring with 33 goals, including six in three tournament games, and eight assists, to earn All-Star status. Maffeo is a three-sport athlete, also playing soccer and lacrosse, and a high honors student.

EMILY ROURKE

WELLESLEY

After a regular season that earned her BSC Carey MVP honors, this senior forward took it up a notch in the tournament with eight goals in three postseason contests as the Raiders steamrolled to a share of a third consecutive Division 1 title. In all, the Shriners Game selection had 28 goals and 12 assists in her final campaign, finishing with 109 career points. A National Honor Society member, Rourke is also a lacrosse captain for Wellesley.

ALL-SCHOLASTICS

MAEVE CAREY

AUSTIN PREP

Already a three-year varsity player as sophomore, this defenseman was a crucial cog for the Cougars as they ripped off four postseason wins to claim a share of the Division 1 state championship. A Catholic Conference League All-Star, she has received an invitation back to the National Development Camp. Carey is also a high honors student at Austin Prep and a member of the lacrosse program.

ALLY DECOSTE

BRAINTREE

In her two seasons with the Wamps after transferring home from prep school, this senior forward has been an offensive stalwart, putting up 90 points, including 31 goals and 21 assists this winter. A BSC All-Star, DeCoste helped Braintree to the Herget Division title and the Division 1 state semifinals. An honor roll student, she is also a star field hockey player for Braintree and has signed to play that sport for Providence.

ANGELINA DIGIROLAMO

WOBURN

Often skating alongside twin sister Lucia, this freshman forward set the state on fire in her first varsity season, lighting the lamp 44 times and adding 18 assists. The Middlesex Liberty MVP lifted her game in the tournament, scoring five times, including all four Woburn goals in the Division 1 quarters and semis on the way to a share of the state crown. Both DiGirolamos are headed to the Selects Girls Hockey Academy in Rochester, N.Y.

LUCIA DIGIROLAMO

WOBURN

It’s tough to overstate the impact that this versatile freshman and her twin sister Angelina made for the Tanners this winter during their run to a share of the Division 1 state title. A Middlesex League All-Star, she scored 25 goals and added 26 assists while playing both forward and defense, finding the net four times in the tournament. The sister duo is taking their talent to the Select Girls Hockey Academy in Rochester, N.Y.

ABBY HOLLAND

BRAINTREE

As one-third of arguably the state’s most dangerous line, this forward makes her second consecutive appearance on the All-Scholastic team. Holland topped 30 points again during the regular season for the BSC Herget champs, giving her over 100 for her career. In the postseason, she was back at it, scoring a trio of goals, including two in the win that put the Wamps into the Division 1 semifinals

KAIA HOLLINGSWORTH

METHUEN/TEWKSBURY

A rock in net for the 2019 Division 1 state champions, the Red Rangers had to rely on their veteran goalie even more this winter after significant graduation losses, and the senior responded, making over 400 saves in helping M/T back to the tournament. The six-year starter and MVC/DCL Large All-Star finishes her illustrious career with over 100 wins and 27 shutouts. A National Honor Society member, she also plays field hockey and lacrosse.

KATHRYN KARO

HINGHAM

In just two seasons with the Harborwomen, this sophomore sniper has already reached the 100-point milestone for her career, eclipsing the mark with a 36-goal, 23-assist campaign this winter. Two of those goals came in one of the tournament’s most memorable games as No. 32 Hingham pulled off a 5-4 overtime upset of No. 1 HPNA in a Division 1 prelim. A Patriot League All-Star, Karo is a high honors student and plays field hockey as well.

HANNAH KEATING

HPNA

After missing a large chunk of her junior year, this MVC/DCL Large All-Star forward returned with a vengeance as a senior for a Hillies team that went unbeaten during the regular season and won the program’s first-ever league title. Keating piled up 26 goals and 16 assists, boosting her career totals to 49 and 40, respectively. A two-time Shriners Game selection and former National Development Camp invite, she has signed to play for Utica College.

EMMA KELLY

BOSTON LATIN

A fixture on the blue line since the seventh grade, this classic two-way senior defenseman earned MVC/DCL Small Co-Player of the Year honors in her final season. A Shriners Game selection, she led the squad in scoring with 13 goals and 21 assists, giving her 104 points for her career. Kelly leaves as a three-time league champ as the Wolfpack not only claimed the Small title this winter but advanced to the Division 1 semifinals.

CHRISTINE LANDRY

NOTRE DAME

Needing someone to step up and fill the scoring void left by graduated All-Scholastic Alexa Graziano, this junior forward did just that, leading the Cougars with 15 goals and 16 assists. Landry is a former National Development Camp invitee and was a Shriners Game selection this winter. An honor roll student, she is a three-sport standout at Notre Dame, also serving as a field hockey and softball captain.

SOPHIA LEVERING

WESTWOOD

Being able to plug a smooth, puck-moving defenseman of this freshman’s caliber into the lineup was a huge boost for the Wolverines this winter as they were able to capture another Tri-Valley League title. Levering notched 15 goals and 19 assists in her debut and was named TVL Co-MVP, scoring twice in the tournament. A National Development Camp invitee, she also plays field hockey and softball and is an honor roll student.

MONIQUE LYONS

AUSTIN PREP

The Cougars were the highest-scoring team in the state this winter and it’s easy to see why with this phenom forward flying around the ice. Only an eighth-grader, she led her squad with an eye-popping 42 goals and 22 assists, tallying seven times in the tournament as Austin Prep earned a share of the Division 1 crown. A Catholic Central League All-Star, she is an honor roll student and also plays soccer and softball.

ALLIE MCDONOUGH

NORWOOD

A prolific goal-scorer in three different sports for the Mustangs over her career, this shifty senior forward wrapped up her time on the ice with another stellar season, garnering Tri-Valley League Co-MVP honors. McDonough registered 37 points this winter, giving her 116 for her career. A Bay State Conference and TVL All-Star during her tenure, she will play field hockey at Holy Cross next year.

SAMANTHA MIRASOLO

NORTH READING

A three-time All-Scholastic, you can find this senior forward’s name all over the record books after a final season that saw her pick up a second Northeastern League MVP nod. With 26 goals and 17 points this winter, she set the Peabody/Lynnfield/North Reading program record for points in a single season. Mirasolo was already the Lady Hornets’ all-time leading scorer entering the year, finishing with 144 career points.

BRITT NAWROCKI

NEEDHAM

With just two years under her belt with the Rockets, this talented sophomore forward has already made quite a name for herself in the tough Bay State Conference. This winter, she struck for 24 goals and 11 assists and now has totals of 42-20-62 just halfway through her high school career. Nawrocki is a former National Development Camp player and a three-sport athlete for Needham, also playing field hockey and lacrosse.

SHEA O’DAY

ARLINGTON

The Spy Ponders played a slew of tight, low-scoring games on the way to a share of the Middlesex Liberty title this winter and this sturdy junior defenseman was critical to that success. In addition to outstanding work in her own end, she also contributed five goals and 15 assists, earning Middlesex League All-Star status and a Shriners Games selection. An honors student, she also swims and plays lacrosse for Arlington.

EMMA O’DONOVAN

BELMONT

After having her sophomore year wiped out by injury following a promising freshman campaign, this forward was better than ever as a junior. The Middlesex League All-Star accounted for nearly half of the team’s scoring this year with 30 goals and 10 assists, finding the net five times in the Marauders’ two tournament wins. O’Donovan is also an all-star performer for the Belmont field hockey team.

MACKENZIE O’NEIL

WELLESLEY

The senior forward was a part of three state championship teams. O’Neil tallied 30 points on the season, giving her a career total of 110 points. A three-sport varsity athlete since her freshman year, O’Neil is a captain of the softball team.

JANICE O’NEIL

WALTHAM

A model of consistency over her first three years with the Hawks, this forward broke out in her senior season, scoring 21 goals and 19 assists on her way to being named MVC/DCL Small Co-MVP. The Shriners Game selection hit the 100-point plateau this winter, finishing with 118 for her career. A National Honor Society member and honor roll student, O’Neil also plays lacrosse at Waltham.

BRIDGET POPKIN

URSULINE

As a five-year member of the varsity, this senior forward proved to be the perfect leader for a young Bears team that set a program record with 14 victories this winter. Popkin paced the squad with 24 goals and 18 assists to push her career point total to 132. Also a field hockey player for Ursuline, she is a National Honor Society member that plans to study nursing in college.

MAKENZIE SHANDLEY

KING PHILIP

Transferring in for her senior year from prep school, this forward felt right at home in the Hockomock League this winter, grabbing MVP honors in her first season with the Warriors. Shandley put up a team-high 19 goals and 12 assists, helping the squad to a six-win improvement from the previous year. An honor roll student, she was also on the KP soccer team that posted an unbeaten regular season mark in the fall.

KELSEY STEWART

NOTRE DAME

This senior was already established as one of the top defensemen in the state after earning All-Scholastic honors last winter, but she took another step forward in her final season, particularly offensively, to book another spot. Stewart recorded eight goals and 10 assists while remaining a pillar in her own end. A field hockey and track athlete as well for the Cougars, she will continue her ice hockey career at Amherst College.

KELSEY SULLIVAN

ST. MARY’S

No team in Division 1 gave up fewer goals than the Spartans this winter at just over one per game, and having a blue liner the quality of this senior defenseman was a major reason why. The two-time Catholic Central League All-Star contributed three goals and 16 assists on the offensive end. A co-secretary of the National Honor Society, Sullivan is also a CCL All-Star lacrosse player for St. Mary’s.

CASEY WARD

NORWELL

Part of one of the state’s most dynamic forward duos with fellow 100-point linemate Casey Messina, this senior copped SEMGHL MVP honors for the league champs. Ward shredded opponents for 48 goals and 17 assists as the Clippers led all of Division 2 in scoring, and lifted her squad into the state semifinals with an overtime winner against Notre Dame. An honor roll student, Ward also plays soccer and lacrosse.
