WHEATON, Ill. – A strong performance in the field events highlighted Roosevelt competing at the Wheaton Invitational on Saturday at Wheaton College.
Lisset Munoz continued her progress in the javelin throw, setting a new career best with a toss of 26.72 meters and finishing 14th. She also ran a personal best in the 800 meters with a time of 2:40.6. Millicent Ghapson took 20th place in the high jump after clearing 1.36 meters, the only other Lakers female to finish in the top-20 as an individual.
The Lakers placed ninth in the 4×100-meter relay on the women’s side with the quartet of Lainey Canan, Kennilyn Alexander, Khaniya Higginbotham and Angela Louis finishing in 50.65 seconds. The Roosevelt men placed one spot better in the 4×100, taking home eighth behind a 43.29 run from Kenan Gaston, Jerrel Calhoun, Tyrin Stewart and Jakobi Turner.
Turner was again among the top performers for the Lakers men, adding a pair of top-10s in the long jump and triple jump. He finished ninth in the long jump with a leap of 6.41 meters then the freshman set an outdoor season best in the triple jump at 13.24 meters to finish fifth.
Twon Jones finished ninth in the triple jump with an 11.83-meter leap, his first successful triple jump of the season. Kieran Cassidy broke 40 meters in the javelin throw for the second time in his career with a toss of 40.34 meters to finish 20th.
On the track, the men had a trio of top-20 finishes led by Javaris Jones in the 400 meters as the freshman breezed to ninth place in 50.46 seconds, nearly a full second improvement over his previous best time. Stewart placed 18th in the 100 meters with a time of 11.22 seconds then took 16th in the 200 in 22.65 seconds.
