
The Chico High School boys soccer team scored five goals in the first half, en route to an 8-0 victory against Shasta in the first round of the Northern Section Division I playoffs.
The Panthers (12-5-2) entered as the No. 4 seed and faced off against the No. 5 seed Wolves (11-8-1), and with the win Chico will now face No. 1 Pleasant Valley (13-1-4) in the NSCIF D-I semifinal at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at PV.
In three regular season matchups Chico and PV tied 1-1 in tournament play, tied 0-0 at Chico High, and PV won 1-0 on its home field.
The winner between Chico and PV will face the winner of No. 2 Corning and No. 3 Las Plumas for the championship on March 1 at Enterprise High School.
No individual stats were reported.
Prep girls basketball
Orland 42, Winters 37: The No. 3 seed in D-IV Orland defeated No. 6 Winters to advance to the semifinals.
Orland led 19-11 after the first quarter, 32-21 at halftime, but the Warriors outscored the Trojans 10-2 in the fourth quarter.
Orland (22-7) travels to face No. 2 Colusa (22-6) at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Durham 53, Portola 47: The No. 3 seed in D-V Durham defeated No. 6 Portola in Durham.
Durham led 24-17 at halftime, but Portola led 35-31 after three quarters. Durham outscored Portola 22-12 in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.
Karla Rangel and Ava Bunch had 13 points each for Durham, Kyleigh Flux had 11 points and Payton Santos had 10. Santos led with 12 rebounds and Flux had eight.
Durham (19-7) faces the No. 2 seed Modoc (21-8) at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Modoc in the semifinals.
Modoc 59, Hamilton 13: The No. 7 seed in D-V Hamilton lost to the No. 2 seed Modoc in Modoc.
Modoc led 18-2 after the first quarter and 32-4 at halftime, and Modoc outscored Hamilton 27-9 in the second half.
Hamilton ends its season 6-21. Modoc (21-8) advances to face No. 3 Durham (19-7) at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Modoc.
Prep boys basketball
Biggs 89, Los Molinos 85: The No. 2 seed in D-VI Biggs defeated No. 7 Los Molinos in overtime in Biggs, advancing to the semifinals.
Biggs led 20-18 after the first quarter, Los Molinos led by one point at halftime, the Wolverines tied it after the third quarter, and the Bulldogs and Wolverines scored 21 points each in the fourth quarter to send the game to overtime. Biggs outscored Los Molinos 13-9 in overtime.
Brady Smith led Biggs with 21 points, Hunter Seipert and Skyler Long had 17 points each, Hudson Brewer had 16 points and David Ibarra had 15 points. Long led the Wolverines with 17 rebounds, and Smith led with eight assists and six steals.
Biggs (17-8) hosts No. 3 Plumas Charter (25-5) at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Biggs.
College men’s basketball
Chico State 93, Cal State LA 90: Chico State guard Jojo Murphy hit a jumper with 5 seconds remaining to seal the Wildcats’ win on Thursday night in Los Angeles.
Murphy finished with 22 points and seven rebounds, but Trae Taylor led the Wildcats with 26 points and seven rebounds. Isaiah Kerr added 11 points, and Caden Harris and Cortevious Taylor had 10 points each.
Chico State (20-5, 16-3 California Collegiate Athletic Association) plays next at 3 p.m. Saturday at Cal State Dominguez Hills, before returning home for two home games to close its regular season on Feb. 27 and March 1.
College women’s basketball
Chico State 73, Cal State LA 70: The Wildcats bounced back from a loss to East Bay with a win in Los Angeles on Thursday.
Chico led 25-21 after the first quarter and 39-33 at halftime. L.A. fought back and outscored the Wildcats 22-18 in the fourth quarter, but fell short.
Makenzi Laporte led Chico with 27 points, adding five rebounds. Jadence Clifton had 21 points, 11 rebounds and four assists. Jordan Allred had 14 points and 11 rebounds, and Meadow Arragon had six points, six rebounds and four blocked shots.
Chico State (19-6, 14-5 CCAA) plays next at 1 p.m. Saturday at Cal State Dominguez Hills, before returning home for two home games to close its regular season on Feb. 27 and March 1.
