The Wisconsin Badgers football program has zeroed in on a new quarterback target in the 2027 recruiting class.

On Friday, Badgers quarterback coach Kenny Guiton extended an offer to Jameson Purcell, a 2027 prospect from Maine South High School (IL).

The 6-foot-2, 185-pound signal-caller is one of the most sought-after quarterbacks in his class, already holding 20+ scholarship offers from programs like Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Miami, Oregon, Indiana, Nebraska, and Texas A&M.

“I have been in contact with Wisconsin since last spring when they came to see me workout, but they have been on my radar ever since I can remember,” Purcell told Badgernotes.

Purcell put up big numbers as a sophomore, throwing for 2,572 yards and 30 touchdowns with seven interceptions, helping lead his team to a quarterfinal playoff run in Illinois’ Class 8A. According to Quarterback HitList, Purcell is ranked as the nation’s No. 7 overall signal-caller.

Purcell has excellent size and running ability, as well as the ability to navigate traffic and create open passing lanes. He’s sharp in the short-to-intermediate passing game, delivering high-velocity throws over the middle and stretching the field vertically. While Purcell is comfortable in the pocket, his quickness and speed on the move make him a threat to extend plays, which is something offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes covets.

“I think they’ve got to be able to provide some sort of athleticism. And I think in two ways: one, they have to have the ability to escape and get out of trouble when you’re throwing the football,” said Grimes. “Then I’d like for them to present some level of run threat to the defense. How much depends on a number of other factors. I look at it on a sliding scale.

“If a guy is a dynamic athlete and every time he touches the ball, he’s got a chance to make an explosive play, then I might take a little bit less in some of the other categories. Ideally, you’ve got a big guy who’s a great thrower and a good runner. There are very few teams that are talented enough everywhere to play with a quarterback that can’t move around.”

The lefty’s well-rounded skillset made him a top target early in the recruiting process. Wisconsin’s staff took notice after scouting him last spring and has continued to monitor his development.

“Coach Guiton and I really connected, and he said he liked my size, accuracy, and velocity, as well as my varsity film,” Purcell added.

With an offer now in hand, Purcell plans to visit Madison this spring, adding Wisconsin to a growing list of potential top contenders in his recruitment.

“I have been to many home games over the past years and love the Badgers fan base and their game-day traditions. It’s definitely a special place,” he said.

The Badgers have been a consistent presence in his process to this point, and the Big Ten and Midwest, in particular, appeal makes playing for head coach Luke Fickell and Wisconsin an intriguing option as he evaluates his next steps.

“I am really looking forward to visiting again and checking out a spring practice. I am also excited to meet the rest of the new offensive coaching staff and hear about their plans for the team going forward,” said Purcell.

“Wisconsin is for sure in my top tier of teams as my recruiting process continues.”

Wisconsin’s coaching staff has now offered scholarships to six QBs in the 2027 class, including Trae Taylor (IL), Teddy Jarrard (GA), Colton Nussmeier (TX), Trent Seaborn (AL), and Peter Bourque (MA).
