Rochester, NY – For the first time in 2025, the Clarkson University Women’s Lacrosse team’s offense was held to single digits as University of Rochester frustrated the Golden Knights’ offense in 12-5 decision on Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Knights fell to 6-3 overall and 1-2 in the Liberty League while the Yellowjackets improved to 4-5 and 1-3. Clarkson is back in action next weekend with a pair of conference games, facing two teams ranked in the top 20 in William Smith College and Ithaca College.
Clarkson’s biggest issue on the day was one of shot accuracy, as only 12 of the team’s 29 total shots were on goal, including just three of 10 in the two middle quarters. Rochester took advantage during that stretch, increasing its 4-2 first period lead to 9-2 through three quarters.
The Knights opened the scoring in the first with a goal at 10:31 and then picked up another less than a minute later for an early 2-1 lead. However, that was it for the Knights for more than 46 minutes until Madelynn Barnum scored at the 8:21 mark of the fourth quarter. By that point, Rochester had plugged along with enough offense to build a sizeable lead. Barnum scored again at 6:50 and then once more with 5:50 remaining, but the Knights could not continue to make the climb for a comeback.
Barnum scored three goals, won six draws, and had three groundballs for the Knights. Gabby Cranfield produced two assists and Sydney Nakas had a goal and an assist as well as three draws. Rylee Ganter also posted three caused turnovers.
For Rochester, Anna Rogers had five points on four goals and one assist and Alyssa Gorny also scored four times. Maddie Bunting produced three caused turnovers and three groundballs.
Clarkson had more shots than the Yellowjackets (29-24), but the shots on goal were in Rochester’s favor (16-12). Draw controls (11-10 for Clarkson) and groundballs (15-13 for Rochester) were fairly even. Isla Ablin made seven saves for Rochester, while both Riley Donovan and Jennaca McGill had two saves for the Knights.
